Oil Prices Surge as Houthi Threats Imperil Red Sea Shipping

Crude oil prices spiked nearly 4% on Wednesday as mounting threats to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait cast a shadow over global energy supplies. The potential for a blockade by Iran-aligned Houthi forces has forced tankers to reverse course, heightening fears of a catastrophic disruption to critical maritime trade routes.

Oil Prices Surge as Houthi Threats Imperil Red Sea Shipping

Brent Crude surged 3.75% to $94.42 per barrel, while WTI Crude followed suit with a 3.69% rise to $87.45. The market volatility stems from intelligence reports, including an advisory from the Joint Maritime Information Center, indicating that Houthi militants have positioned missiles and drones near the strait. This strategic chokepoint is vital for Saudi Arabia, which relies on the Red Sea port of Yanbu to circumvent the Strait of Hormuz.

Evidence of the growing danger is already visible on the water: multiple Saudi oil tankers performed emergency U-turns on Tuesday following the Houthi declaration of a blockade. Beyond the Middle East, supply concerns are compounded by logistical failures in the Black Sea, where the CPC terminal has suspended operations due to attacks on tankers. With President Donald Trump signaling an escalation in military involvement rather than diplomatic engagement, the uncertainty surrounding global energy transit remains acute.
