Middle East Tensions Push Oil Toward Five-Week Highs

Brent crude reached $92.44 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate climbed to $85.51 on Wednesday, as an 11th consecutive night of U.S. strikes against Iranian military targets exacerbated fears of a supply-side shock across global energy markets.

Middle East Tensions Push Oil Toward Five-Week Highs

The latest U.S. Central Command operations targeted logistics infrastructure, maritime assets, and drone storage facilities in an attempt to curb threats to commercial shipping. While CENTCOM maintains that the Strait of Hormuz remains navigable, the market's focus has shifted to the Red Sea, where the Iran-backed Houthi movement has declared a blockade on Saudi oil exports passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Three Saudi tankers were forced to reverse course on Tuesday, highlighting the vulnerability of the region's few remaining export routes.

President Trump has dismissed the possibility of immediate diplomatic intervention, signaling that military operations will likely intensify. This geopolitical volatility currently outweighs domestic inventory data; although the American Petroleum Institute reported a build in crude and distillate stocks, price action remains tethered to the escalating conflict. With no clear off-ramp in sight, the risk premium on oil continues to swell as shipping security deteriorates across both critical maritime chokepoints.
