MASH Gallery Reclaims the Handmade in By Hand & By Heart

Opening July 25 at the gallery’s West Hollywood space, the exhibition features works by Anthony Liggins, Christy Hopkins, Diane Holland, Haleh Mashian, Thomas Piekunka, Aaron Sheppard, Tina Bluefield, and Belén Senra. While their individual practices range from fiber installation to hard-edge painting, they are united by a shared commitment to materiality as a site of meaning. The show challenges the mid-twentieth-century doctrine of medium specificity, proposing instead that the future of art lies in the fluid boundaries between painting, sculpture, and mixed media.

Each artist offers a distinct approach to the physical process. Thomas Piekunka pushes the limits of the canvas by suspending paint in three-dimensional space, while Belén Senra elevates fiber art through large-scale, hand-tufted installations that draw on global textures. Meanwhile, painters like Christy Hopkins and Anthony Liggins emphasize the kinetic, improvisational nature of their craft, allowing form to emerge from the visceral act of making. By centering labor and intuition, the exhibition invites viewers to engage with objects that demand sustained attention rather than quick consumption.
