AmeriServ Financial Returns to Profit with Record Quarterly Earnings

AmeriServ Financial reported a sharp turnaround in the second quarter of 2026, posting $2.7 million in net income compared to a $282,000 loss during the same period last year. The Johnstown-based bank attributed the recovery to a 24-basis point expansion in net interest margin and a significant reduction in credit loss provisions.

CEO Jeffrey A. Stopko pointed to effective balance sheet management as the primary driver behind the firm's improved financial health. Net interest income, which accounts for roughly 72% of the company's total revenue, grew by 9.1% year-over-year. The bank also benefited from a more favorable U.S. Treasury yield curve and lower borrowing costs following the Federal Reserve's monetary easing in late 2025.

While loan portfolios saw a slight contraction, the company maintained strong liquidity with deposits averaging $1.27 billion. Asset quality also showed signs of stabilization, allowing the bank to record a $294,000 credit loss recovery, a stark contrast to the $3.1 million provision set aside in the second quarter of 2025. Following these results, the board declared a cash dividend of $0.03 per share, payable on August 17, 2026.
