Resources Minister Shane Jones confirmed a rebound in investor interest, noting that the government has finally stabilized the regulatory environment. Despite this renewed appetite, no new drilling contracts have been signed since the government lifted the moratorium last year. Companies are now rushing to formalize agreements, as the Labour Party has pledged to block new offshore permits if they return to power, though they have promised to honor any contracts signed prior to the election.
Energy security remains a primary driver for the current administration, which is simultaneously fast-tracking plans for an LNG import terminal by 2028. Domestic gas production has cratered over the last decade, leaving the country vulnerable to supply shocks. While the current government views exploration as vital to filling this energy gap, the opposition continues to view the sector as an outdated industry that should not receive state support.
