FairGene Opens Specialized Black Soldier Fly Egg Facility in Alberta

A new production facility in Bassano, Alberta, has begun shipping black soldier fly eggs to global insect farmers. The venture, FairGene, combines Fairville Farming Co.’s agricultural infrastructure with NRGene Canada’s proprietary MaxBSF genetics platform to address the industry's growing demand for consistent, high-yield biological inputs.

The Bassano site focuses on scaling the output of BSF larvae, which are increasingly sought after for sustainable protein, oil, and fertilizer production. By utilizing MaxBSF genetics, the facility aims to shorten production cycles and improve bioconversion rates. Data indicates that these specialized lines can achieve up to 2.1 times the output of industry-standard strains, allowing producers to increase biomass volume without expanding their current facility footprints.

Beyond egg production, the partnership is rolling out a neonate delivery system capable of shipping one-day-old larvae. Each shipping container currently holds one million neonates, with capacity projections targeting 2.5 million by the end of 2026. This logistical solution provides a two-week shelf life, effectively bypassing the need for commercial farms to manage on-site incubation processes.

William Wipf, secretary at Fairville Farming Co., noted that integrating advanced genetics into daily operations was the primary driver for the collaboration. NRGene Canada chief business officer Yossi Levi added that the facility serves as a practical hub for deploying these breeding technologies at scale. Looking forward, the companies are evaluating plans to develop a dedicated rearing facility in Alberta to function as both a production center and a demonstration site for the broader insect agriculture sector.
