Since the partnership began in 2021, Hyundai and Healthy Seas have cleared more than 320 tons of marine debris across 10 countries. The expansion into Southern California focuses on the waters near Catalina Island, where volunteer divers from Ghost Diving USA remove abandoned fishing gear, including nets from the 2011 Midnight Hour wreck. By integrating these recovery missions with employee-led beach cleanups at Huntington State Beach, the automaker aims to create a visible, hands-on impact on regional ecosystems.
Beyond physical remediation, the initiative emphasizes the circular economy. Recovered nylon waste is processed into ECONYL® yarn for manufacturing, turning hazardous ocean waste into raw material. The program also leverages the Hyundai Hope initiative to host 'Ocean Heroes' workshops at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley. These sessions teach children about the dangers of ghost nets, aiming to foster long-term environmental stewardship. This work complements Hyundai’s broader sustainability efforts, which include the IONIQ Forest reforestation project and global carbon reduction goals.
