Maynard Institute launches California news entrepreneurship cohort

Eight California newsrooms have been selected for the inaugural Fire Up Entrepreneurship Program, an initiative backed by state funding to bolster local media sustainability. Participants will receive seven months of targeted training in revenue generation and audience engagement, alongside a $20,000 grant to advance their specific editorial projects.

The program, a core component of the broader Propel Initiative, aims to fortify the state's multilingual media landscape. Selected outlets include Bay City News Foundation, Daylight San Diego, India Currents, El Informador del Valle, El Latino Central Coast, MindSite News, Nowruz Media, and Observer Group Newspapers of Southern California. These organizations are tasked with addressing critical challenges ranging from the documentation of overlooked Black narratives and the provision of bilingual news to navigating the shifting landscape of AI-driven traffic.

Beyond individual mentorship, the cohort functions as a strategic effort to stabilize public service journalism across 26 Assembly districts and 12 Senate districts. By providing resources to outlets serving these diverse regions, the Maynard Institute seeks to protect civic engagement and ensure that quality reporting remains accessible to underserved communities throughout the state.
