Determinate Systems secures FedRAMP High status for Nix platform

Determinate Systems has achieved FedRAMP High Authorization, partnering with federal cloud provider Knox Systems to bring reproducible software supply chain tools into government environments. This milestone enables federal agencies and contractors to utilize the Nix ecosystem for mission-critical systems requiring strict security, auditability, and compliance standards.

Determinate Systems secures FedRAMP High status for Nix platform

Engineering teams currently face mounting pressure from complex dependency graphs and the influx of AI-generated code, which often obscures the provenance of deployed software. By leveraging Nix, Determinate Systems provides a framework where builds are reproducible and attestable across cloud, edge, and autonomous systems. The new authorization allows agencies to deploy these tools within high-compliance infrastructures, including those handling Controlled Unclassified Information.

Knox Systems facilitated this transition by absorbing the complexities of the federal compliance process. The partnership grants users access to secure binary caching, private artifact sharing, and fine-grained role-based access controls. According to Graham Christensen, co-founder and CTO of Determinate Systems, the move aligns with a broader policy shift toward supply chain transparency and the necessity for accurate software bills of materials. Irina Denisenko, CEO of Knox Systems, noted that this integration addresses critical risks such as configuration drift and dependency obscurity that have historically hindered modernization efforts in the defense and civilian sectors.
