Argus Launches Global Price Benchmarks for Methanol-to-Jet Fuel

As airlines scramble to meet tightening environmental mandates, Argus Media has introduced the first global cost indexes for methanol-to-jet fuel. Covering nine major production hubs, the new data provides a transparent pricing mechanism for the synthetic fuel pathway recently ratified by ASTM International for aviation use.

Argus Launches Global Price Benchmarks for Methanol-to-Jet Fuel

The introduction of these weekly indexes follows the formal approval of the methanol-to-jet process, granting airlines a viable route for producing electrolytic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF). With the European Union mandating e-SAF blending by 2030 and the UK setting an earlier 2028 start, fuel suppliers face significant penalties for non-compliance. These costs, which double the price differential against conventional fuels, have intensified the need for reliable market benchmarks.

Argus has also begun publishing weekly e-methanol costs, serving both the aviation industry and the marine sector, where chemical users are increasingly tracking these prices to manage their own decarbonization strategies. By aligning these figures with European standards for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin, the agency aims to facilitate direct comparisons across disparate global production routes. Chairman and chief executive Adrian Binks noted that these additions are designed to bring clarity to the complex, evolving landscape of low-carbon aviation fuels.
