The LatAm-FINGERS initiative, published in The Lancet, moves beyond simple translation of existing U.S. models. Researchers successfully tailored core elements—physical activity, nutrition, and cognitive training—to local habits, incorporating regional staples like quinoa and avocado while replacing standard exercise routines with culturally familiar movements such as salsa and tango.
Participants were split into two groups to test the efficacy of support levels. The 539 individuals in the Systematic Lifestyle Intervention group received consistent coaching, cardiovascular monitoring, and regular group meetings. By the end of the study, this cohort demonstrated a 55% greater improvement in global cognition compared to those who received only periodic, self-guided recommendations. Lead author Lucia Crivelli noted that the program’s success stems from its practicality and feasibility as a public health strategy, proving that brain health initiatives can be effectively implemented in low- and middle-income settings.
