The partnership between the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) targets the 700,000 children living in poverty across the state. With nearly half of these youths concentrated in just 15% of Florida’s ZIP codes, the program offers a lifeline for students facing systemic obstacles to academic and economic mobility. The new commitment funds 1,000 additional two-year scholarships, doubling the program's initial capacity and ensuring support remains available through 2031.
To ensure these investments translate into degrees, the program collaborates with organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs Florida Alliance, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Take Stock in Children. Participants are selected based on academic effort and personal resilience, with recipients required to maintain a crime-free and drug-free record. These scholarships are applicable at Florida public colleges, universities, and vocational institutions, providing a versatile pathway for students who might otherwise be unable to pursue post-secondary education.
