Melrose Breaks Ground on New Engine 2 Fire Station

Mayor Jen Grigoraitis joined city officials and construction partners in Melrose, Massachusetts, this week to break ground on a modern facility for Engine 2. Funded by a 2023 public safety debt exclusion, the project replaces aging infrastructure with a station built to meet the specific operational demands of contemporary firefighting.

Melrose Breaks Ground on New Engine 2 Fire Station

The construction team, led by CTA Construction Managers, faces the complex challenge of building the new station on an occupied site. This requires meticulous risk management and coordination to ensure the fire department maintains continuous service throughout the demolition and reconstruction phases. The facility, designed by Dore & Whittier, emphasizes firefighter wellness, efficient circulation, and long-term resilience.

Pat Tompkins, principal at CTA Construction Managers, noted that the project relies on a long-standing partnership between the firm, Vertex, and the architects, who have collaborated on multiple municipal projects over the last 13 years. For the City of Melrose, the station represents a critical investment in public safety, aimed at providing first responders with the tools necessary for reliable, long-term service to the community.
