The exhibition, running through August 30, 2026, bridges the gap between Johnson’s 2021 award-winning monograph and a collection of previously unpublished images. By returning to the same families repeatedly, she has tracked the transition of her subjects from children into young adulthood. These portraits move beyond the stereotypes frequently associated with the community, focusing instead on the individual humanity of those living within a distinct, often misunderstood, cultural framework.
Johnson emphasizes that her work evolved from a standard documentary project into a series of long-term personal relationships. As a photographer and a mother, she highlights the universal markers of growth against the backdrop of the Travellers' rich oral traditions and distinct environment. The gallery will host an opening reception on July 16 at 6:00 PM, followed by an artist talk with Johnson and gallery director Michael Foley on July 21 at 6:30 PM. The prints for the show were produced in collaboration with Weldon Color Lab.
