Trump Administration Reopens California Lands for Oil Leasing

The Bureau of Land Management has initiated a 30-day public scoping period for 36,000 acres of federal land across four California counties, signaling a renewed attempt to facilitate oil and gas development despite persistent opposition from state leadership and environmental groups.

This latest push covers parcels spread across Kern, Kings, Fresno, and San Luis Obispo counties. While the move does not grant immediate drilling authority, it serves as the foundational step toward potential lease sales. The administration’s strategy follows a broader approval last week of an 850,000-acre leasing plan, underscoring a consistent effort to prioritize domestic energy extraction on public acreage.

Federal officials maintain that the economic stakes remain high, noting that more than 95% of federal drilling in the state occurs in Kern County. These operations generate over $200 million in annual economic activity and provide between $65 million and $90 million in federal royalties, half of which are returned to the state. However, the proposal immediately reignites a long-standing political friction between federal mandates and California’s aggressive climate goals. With the comment window open until August 1, the process guarantees further legal and administrative challenges as companies navigate the complex path toward securing drilling permits.
