Eight Carolinas Infrastructure Projects Honored in National Milestone List

As the United States commemorates its 250th anniversary, the American Road & Transportation Builders Association has selected 250 projects that defined the nation’s growth. Among the landmarks chosen for their historical and economic impact are eight specific transportation achievements located across North and South Carolina.

The curated list highlights infrastructure ranging from early steam-powered rail to modern aviation hubs. North Carolina’s contributions include the Blue Ridge Parkway, which draws 16.5 million annual visitors, the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, the high-traffic Charlotte International Airport, and the Alligator River Bridge and Tunnel. South Carolina is represented by the iconic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, the historic Charleston-Hamburg Railroad, the innovative Gaffney T-Bridge, and the Best Friend of Charleston, the country’s first passenger steam locomotive.

ARTBA President Dave Bauer noted that these selections serve as a testament to the long-term dividends of strategic investment. The projects were identified through a national survey of industry experts, engineers, and academics, focusing on mobility, safety, and economic development. Beyond celebrating historical milestones, the association emphasized that these sites reflect a legacy of foresight, urging continued commitment to infrastructure development as the country begins its next century of expansion.
