World Cup Fans Pivot to Buses to Navigate Host Cities

With airfare and fuel costs climbing, soccer fans are bypassing airports in favor of the highway. New data from Flix North America reveals that passenger volumes in host cities like New York, Dallas, and Boston have hit their highest levels since January 2025 as supporters seek affordable transit between matches.

The surge is most pronounced across the Northeast, where the proximity of matches allows fans to hop between New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Boston without the logistical strain of regional flights. The New York City–Boston corridor currently stands as the most-booked route within the combined FlixBus and Greyhound network. While domestic travelers dominate the current passenger manifest, the company reports a significant influx of international visitors, particularly from Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, Spain, and Italy.

Karina Frayter, head of communications at Flix North America, noted that the tournament is highlighting a shift toward value-conscious travel. Fans are increasingly bundling multiple host cities into single itineraries, a strategy that plays directly into the strengths of the company’s 1,800-destination network. This spike in demand mirrors a broader upward trend in bus travel across North America over the past year, as passengers look for alternatives to traditional car and air travel during high-traffic events.
