Volcanic Wines Gain Ground as Global Trade Turns to Terroir

More than 300 wine professionals and 60 producers converged on New York City for the 5th International Volcanic Wines Conference on June 10, 2026. The sold-out event underscored a shifting focus within the industry, moving away from simple varietal recognition toward a deeper appreciation for the influence of geology on flavor.

Held at Manhatta, the conference showcased over 200 distinct wines from regions including Etna, Santorini, the Canary Islands, and Hungary’s Carpathian Arc. The program featured four sold-out masterclasses that examined the intersection of indigenous grapes and volcanic soil, emphasizing how these ancient landscapes shape longevity and regional identity.

John Szabo, Master Sommelier and co-founder of Volcanic Wines International, noted that the industry’s engagement has evolved significantly. Professionals are increasingly prioritizing the geological narrative of a wine, viewing volcanic origins as a primary marker of authenticity. This sentiment was echoed by Gino Colangelo, who pointed to the event’s record attendance as proof of a sustained, global appetite for unique, place-driven viticulture. The day also highlighted winners of the Volcanic Wine Awards, organized in partnership with JancisRobinson.com, celebrating producers from Italy to Chile who demonstrate the character of their specific volcanic soils.
