The competition, now in its 19th year, invites students in grades five through eight to submit short videos outlining original ideas for solving everyday challenges. Judges evaluate the entries based on scientific knowledge, creativity, and communication efficacy. In addition to the state-level honorees, four students—Darsh Goel, Kishan Kumar, Ayan Roychowdhury, and Ashwin Sundaresan—received Honorable Mention awards for the ingenuity of their concepts.

William Brown, 3M Chairman and CEO, noted that the program focuses on supporting young innovators as they translate ideas into measurable impacts. Beyond the initial recognition, the initiative serves as a pipeline for future STEM leaders; past participants have gone on to file patents, establish nonprofits, and earn spots on influential lists like Forbes 30 Under 30. All honorees receive specialized recognition and prize packs, while the broader 3M Young Scientist Lab continues to provide free, standards-aligned digital resources to students and educators nationwide.
