Strait of Hormuz Tanker Traffic Shows Tentative Signs of Recovery

Twenty-four commodity vessels navigated the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, marking the first uptick in activity since a series of attacks on commercial shipping stalled transit late last week. While the flow remains 90% below pre-war levels, the movement of supertankers into the Persian Gulf signals a cautious return to operations.

Strait of Hormuz Tanker Traffic Shows Tentative Signs of Recovery

The recent surge in inbound traffic suggests that shipowners and oil producers are betting on the stability of the vital chokepoint, even as the threat of renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States lingers. By positioning supertankers to load crude, operators are preparing for the return leg, banking on the assumption that the route will remain navigable for fully laden vessels.

Energy giants in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar continue to load oil and LNG, maintaining supply lines despite the weekend’s retaliatory strikes by U.S. Central Command. Meanwhile, Iranian exports are also moving from the Kharg Island terminal, supported by a temporary U.S. waiver on oil sanctions that persists until August 21. This fragile resumption of traffic follows a weekend of intense caution, during which operators largely halted movements in response to the volatility near the Strait.
